BARBARA CARPENTER, FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER

BARBARA CARPENTER began her work in photography at UCD under Ron Wohlauer and Ray Whiting. Working primarily with a Hasselblad medium format camera, Barbara was drawn to both classic black and white landscape and color abstraction, the latter becoming her signature work. In recent years, she has embraced digital printing, and now uses a combination of film and digital capture. She scans her negatives from subject matter created on table-tops as well as found abstractions from favorite junkyards. She has always chosen not to manipulate the images digitally, but to print them as she sees them through the lens of her camera. Recent work with digital capture has added possibilities for her junkyard compositions, always unmanipulated and brilliantly printed using archival digital processes. Barbara's solo exhibits include Grant Gallery, Hobart's Gallery, Spark Gallery and Lincoln Center. She has exhibited her work in the Cherry Creek Arts Festival and ZIP 8020 Group Shows and has been included in juried shows such as the Rocky Mountain Regional and others - too many to mention here. Barbara exhibited at Core New Art Space for 4 years and is now with Spark Gallery. Her work has been reviewed by Denver's most respected art critics as among the finest contemporary art in the region. Barbara is now Director for Spark Gallery. FOUND ABSTRACTIONS: JUNKYARD DOGS
Join Barbara for an evening in our studio learning to see abstract compositions in places you would never guess, and pick Barbara’s brain for special technical secrets. Be prepared on Saturday to spend the better part of a day wandering through a fantastic junkyard in SW Metro Denver, with camera and tripod, come rain or shine . . . Apply your basic photography skills (digital or film, color suggested) while you experiment with specific ideas for where to look; play with unusual exposure guidelines and techniques; practice with changing light, angles, area of focus and reflections. Make your photograph more than just a nice shot of a funky old bumper or the obvious and typical shot of a rusty piece of metal. You'll find that our workshop reveals new discoveries, offering you a chance to create images with fascinating abstractions of vibrant line, texture and color – from sources you’d never anticipate before working with Barbara. A couple of weeks later, get together to view the final photographs, get feedback from Barbara and your fellow participants, and share in the fun of trying an intriguing approach to photographing junk!
